The Feast of the Convite has been celebrated in Roccavaldina (Messina) since 1780 in devotion to Saint Nicholas, believed to have performed a miracle in 1300 that saved the population from certain famine.
The celebration, which nevertheless has pagan origins, involves the sacrifice of a calf and is followed by the formation of two different processions that then merge into one, finally giving rise to the 'Convito', the meal, as we see in these images. It has an extremely irregular cadence, as it can repeat itself no earlier than five years and no later than fifty. In this footage we find the 1953 Convite: the previous one had taken place twenty years earlier, while the next one only took place in 1969.
