In 1968, Carlo Pascucci documented the festa dell'Unità, which took place from 12 to 15 September at the Montagnola park in Bologna. The scene captures a packed crowd animating the event, while the camera lingers on the food stalls and signs promoting local specialities such as tortellini, lasagne, polenta and sausage ‘of our own production’. The Festa dell'Unità, organised by the Italian Communist Party, was a popular gathering where political debate, entertainment and the celebration of culinary traditions intertwined. A party party, but also a popular festival, it was a huge event: on the last Sunday of the 1968 edition, as many as 60,000 meals were served. This edition marked the end of an era for the Montagnola, as the municipality was about to begin work on renovating the park, which was now unsuitable for hosting an event of this size. From the next editions, the festival will find a new location in larger spaces outside the city walls.
