In 1962, the amateur filmmaker Gustavo Buratti Zanchi (Tavo Burat) documents the collective festive moments of the Baìo of Sampeyre. In the town square, to the rhythm of the Tambourin, participants and villagers join in lively dances, while the characters of the Mori also parade. In this context, the local women appear, not in traditional costume but wearing contemporary clothes: through dances, playful antics, and small “thefts” of objects from the participants, they assert their presence in a celebration that officially excludes them. This informal participation highlights the uniqueness of the Baìo: female roles in the procession were historically performed by men, following an ancient custom that combined popular theater and patriarchal pastoral tradition. The dances in the square thus become a moment for women to claim a space, contributing with humor and merriment to the energy and completeness of the festival.
