This sequence from 1949, filmed by the mountaineer and cinephile Mario Fantin, documents the beginning of an excursion towards Mont Blanc. The original subtitles guide the viewer like a filmed diary: "September 10, 1949" appears immediately at the opening, followed by the evocation of the "enormous fascination" of Europe's highest peak. The film alternates between text and images, conveying the intense preparation that precedes the undertaking: books, maps, guides, and alpine charts scroll past the lens, as Fantin narrates the desire, cultivated over the years, to know the massif even before seeing it in person. The decision to depart is presented as a measured, almost solemn moment. The camera then records the practical actions of the journey: the equipment being arranged next to a railway carriage, the sign indicating the road to Aosta and Courmayeur, the clouds dampening the mountaineer's initial enthusiasm, and the first glimpses of the villages at the foot of the mountain. The patient rhythm of waiting includes reconnaissance trips: the excursion to Lago Checrouit is introduced by trail signs and a group ride on a small truck along an unpaved mountain road, with women and children participating in the ascent. The clip concludes with a telescope pointed towards the massif.
