Lucera's Castle, originally, was represented by Frederick II Holy Roman Emperor's Palatium, build in the 13th Century. After the fall of the city, a fruitful muslim settlement, by the hand of Charles I of Anjou - since it was strategically located on top of Albano Hill, dominating the plains around - it was the Angevin king who wanted the fortress built, a project lasting more than ten years (1269-1283). It was Charles II, however, who destroyed the settlement in 1300, starting the slow decline of the city.
