In 1903 the project to build a railway path to link the city with the Inferior Funicolar Station, to break down the 4 hours needed by horse from Naples, was completed, whereas it had already been dropped once in 1896 due to the high costs. Thanks to a circumstance of multiple simultaneous projects, and to the subsequent decreasement of costs, the railway was realized in narrow gauge for most of the distance, turning to gear rack only for the worse trait. in 1913, after the 1906 eruption damages, it was extended to the newly-built station in Pugliano-Resina. The trip carries on from the Observatory Station, nearby the Eremo Hotel - built in 1902 by the Cook society and abandoned between the 70s and the 80s - and it keeps going until the true funicolar, toward the volcano crater.
