In 1981, an anonymous filmmaker documented the Sanctuary of Madonna del Pollino, located at 1,537 meters on the northern side of the Pollino Massif, in the municipality of San Severino Lucano. The footage opens with a close-up of a painting of the Madonna on the church’s façade, then gradually reveals the entire building: a white structure with purple accents, a bell-gable, and a large tree in the foreground under which a small group of people is seated. The camera lingers on the wooden portals and sacred images of the façade before opening out to the surrounding mountainous landscape, where the sanctuary stands isolated among rocky and forested slopes. The only other human presence is a small distant building. The video conveys the atmosphere of a pilgrimage site nestled in nature, home to a Byzantine-style statue of the Virgin, displayed at the sanctuary only during the summer months and kept in the village church during winter.
