In 1966, Don Vitalini documented an ascent in the Rhaetian Alps, near Valfurva, along the itinerary that leads from Ponte delle Vacche to the Dosegù Glacier up to Punta San Matteo, a symbolic location of the "White War" (WWI high-altitude conflict). The film follows a large group of mountaineers and Alpini (Mountain Troops/Veterans) advancing in single file on the vast snowy slopes. In the extract, the group of mountaineers and Alpini crosses the area of the Tresero Summit Cross (Croce di Vetta Tresero), installed by the CAI of Figino Serenza in 1965, proceeding in an orderly line on the snowy slopes. Their silhouettes stand out in the rosy morning light, revealing period clothing—canvas backpacks, leather boots, alpine hats, wool sweaters—and the measured slowness of the high-altitude progression. As the light increases, the camera lingers on tired and smiling faces, short stops, and the sure footing of the roped teams ascending steep ridges and glacial sections. The final images show a plaque dedicated to the 5th Alpini Regiment and the fallen soldiers of the Monte Ortles Ski Battalion.
