In the 60s, some parts of Italy still rely heavily on agricultural rhythms and rituals. There is a fascinating and archaic relationship tying men and women, working the land with the help of strong oxen, to that same land. Their faces are covered by traditional headdresses and shadows, and it is impossible to make out their expressions and traits. They bend their backs before the sun, crushed by fatigue, as their ancient relatives did in Millet's paintings.
