In September 1968, Carlo Pascucci documented the festa dell'Unità, which was held from 12 to 15 September in the Montagnola park in Bologna. In this excerpt, the camera lingers on convivial scenes such as the tables packed with people intent on eating, and on the food stands displaying typical products such as grana cheese and porchetta. The Festa dell'Unità, organised by the Italian Communist Party, was an occasion for popular gathering that intertwined political debate, entertainment and celebration of culinary tradition. Not just a political event, but a real people's festival, the 1968 edition was distinguished by its impressive attendance: as many as 60,000 meals were served on the final day.This edition, however, marks the party's farewell to the Montagnola park. The Municipality, in fact, is preparing to start work on redeveloping the area, which has now become too small to contain an event of such magnitude. From the next editions, the festival will be moved to larger spaces outside the city centre.
