The Fortress Bridge, whose story lasted for more than a few ceturies, was demolished by the Germans falling back in 1944, only to be rebuilt, at a single bay in spite of the previous five-bay structure, by the end of the 1950s: it was then the last one being built again of the several bridges in Pisa which were blown up by the Nazis.
